The Palm Beach Pack & Paddle Club is having its monthly meeting with Leneita Fix, the executive director of the Reef Institute in West Palm Beach. She will share her experiences at the institute and ways to conserve coral formations.
Coral conservation in Florida is crucial because of the state's extensive coral reef ecosystems, particularly the Florida Reef Tract, the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. These reefs support diverse marine life, protect the coast from erosion and contribute to tourism.
Factors threatening Florida’s coral reefs include climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, overfishing and coastal development. For more information on Okeeheelee Nature Center and other county-operated nature centers, visit www.pbcnature.com.
