The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is presenting a new exhibition, “Time Flows Like Water: Works by Masumi Sakagami,” through Feb. 16.
A Fusion of East and West
The Yamato-kan gallery houses over two dozen pieces by the New York-based artist. Sakagami’s thought-provoking canvases seamlessly blend abstract painting with classical Japanese calligraphy.
Inspired by Nature
Throughout the exhibit, Sakagami makes masterful use of natural elements like sumi-e (charcoal) and gofun (ground oyster shells), interwoven with ancient removal techniques. These elements combine with the principles of Sogetsu ikebana (flower arrangement) — fresh approach, movement, balance and harmony — to reveal ethereal color palettes and hidden dimensions.
